Overdiagnosis: the scourge of modern medicine

There is a peculiar kind of harm that arrives wearing the clothes of care. It comes with the best intentions — a diligent doctor, a concerned health system, a public genuinely frightened by statistics. And yet, quietly, over the past half-century, medicine has developed a troubling habit: turning normal human variation into pathology, treating numbers as diseases, and intervening in processes that, left alone, would have resolved themselves without incident.
